Rural Midwifery
Recruitment and Retention Services
|
| The national midwifery
recruitment and retention service, which is a joint venture between
NZCOM and the MMPO are now providing a comprehensive service for
Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) midwives.
The national co-ordinator rural@mmpo.org.nz
is located in the MMPO offices in Christchurch.
The service consists of 4 parts::
- Recruitment of:
- LMC midwives to rural LMC workforce 'hot spots',
- Locum midwives
- Midwife mentors
- Service provision and support:
- Support and funding for establishment of rural LMC midwifery practices,
- Support and funding for relocation of an LMC midwife to a rural locality
- Locum midwifery cover, both planned and emergency
- Mentorship for rural midwives
- Subsidising rural LMC midwives for some costs including:
- Provision of a remote rural bonus
- Meeting some costs of recertification
- Service administration including:
- bookings and payment for locum midwives and mentors
- access to locum midwives
- access to the mentor midwife register
To determine your eligibility for this service, we have set out
below further information on the service.

Emergency Locum cover |
If you meet the above criteria,
we can provide emergency locum cover for short periods to enable you to make arrangements to have your women transferred to another midwife or return to work.
We make every effort to meet your needs within 24-48 hours of a request. Main reasons include bereavement, sudden illness, family emergency, accidents and the need for surgery.
Contact us on rural@mmpo.org.nz
or 0800MIDWIFE for further information. |

Would you like to move to a rural locality and
join a local LMC practice? |
| If you are planning to move into to a rural LMC midwifery practice as a non DHB employed
or self-employed LMC midwife and plan to build up a caseload of locally birthing women, you may meet the criteria for LMC relocation funding.
Because there is only sufficient funding for 5 LMC relocation grants,
we have prioritized access based on such factors as:
- Locality identified as having extreme or high need for LMC midwives
- Number of other LMC midwives in the locality
- Number of other LMCs forming the practice
- Length of time planning to stay providing LMC services in the locality
- Support from others in the locality for the service to be established
Contact us on rural@mmpo.org.nz
or 0800MIDWIFE for further information or complete and send us an
application form.

demand earlier, we will make every effort to start earlier in the
new year. Please email rural@mmpo.org.nz
with your name and postal address for application forms and information
sheets on which every service you are interested in. You may be eligible
for more than one service. Call the MMPO on 03 3772485 if you would
like to discuss the options further with Michelle O'Grady who is currently
co-ordinating the service establishment phase. |
What is the process? |
| We have a process for managing applications, assessing eligibility, booking and paying for the service:
|
Disbursement of payments to Locum Midwives |
We manage disbursements to other practitioners, such as locums or midwives providing back-up for others. The information for disbursement is required on:
- The pregnancy summary form.
- Or on the baby summary and disbursement form.
- Or by email.
To do this efficiently, we need to have the following information:
- The full name of the midwife or other practitioner.
- The bank account number (if not an MMPO member).
To arrange this please contact the MMPO Manager on:
