The MMPO was established by the New Zealand College of Midwives in 1997 to provide its Lead Maternity Carer midwife members with a supportive practice management and quality assurance infrastructure and a business framework enabling high quality continuity of care for women throughout Aotearoa, New Zealand.
|
The Organisation's main functions |
- To ensure midwives continue to have an environment where they can provide maternity care to women within the midwifery model of care.
- To negotiate with maternity service purchasers for service contracts, which enable midwives to provide high quality, women focused maternity care.
- To support the development of midwifery services throughout the country, particularly for Maori, rural women and those choosing a home birth.
- To negotiate and manage payment for maternity services to Lead Maternity Carer midwives and associated maternity providers.
- To collect relevant maternity outcome data so women who choose midwifery led maternity care can make an informed choice.
- To ensure that midwife members take part in quality assurance activities and are members of their nationally recognised professional body, the NZCOM.
- To support the professional role of the NZCOM to position, develop and service the profession of midwifery in New Zealand.
|
Management of the National Midwifery Activities and Outcomes Database |
|
The MMPO also manages the midwifery outcomes database for the New Zealand College of Midwives. All midwifery data obtained through our practice management system is aggregated and developed into a series of reports. This data is used to provide direction for midwifery practice and maternity service development both nationally and internationally.
|
Promoting Community Health |
|
The MMPO is actively involved in promoting community health with NZCOM through:
- Development of maternity services in rural and remote areas.
- Supporting breast feeding initiatives including the BFHI.
- Provision of information on the logistics of maternity service provision.
- Working in liaison with DHB's and other community health providers to ensure access to maternity services for women .
- Recruitment of midwives into rural localities.
- Measuring and evaluating maternity care outcomes of midwifery LMC care.

Data Specialists |
We have a small team of data entry (and Section 88) specialists and an IT Facilitator working with Lisa in MMPO House at 374 Manchester Street, Christchurch. Click here for a map. We also provide IT support for over 200 midwives who mange their own electronic version of our midwifery practice management system on their own computer from home or their practice.
After working with Section 88 for almost 4 years and entering hundreds of thousands of claims, these women have a very extensive knowledge of the claiming processes and eligibility criteria. They receive calls daily from midwife members unsure about their eligibility for payment and as a result they have built up an excellent relationship with HealthPAC.
